Wartagate.com - Former actress Meghan Markle, known for her role in the TV series The Suits, has officially announced that she has changed her last name to Sussex. The decision was revealed during an episode of With Love, Meghan, which premiered on Netflix on March 4.
The revelation happened when actress Mindy Kaling, who was a guest on the show, repeatedly referred to Meghan by her maiden name, Markle. Meghan then gently corrected her by saying, "It's so funny because you keep calling me Meghan Markle — you know, I'm Sussex now."
According to ENews on Wednesday (5/3), Meghan's name change aligns with the title given to her and Prince Harry by Queen Elizabeth II when they got married in 2018 — Duchess of Sussex and Duke of Sussex.
Since then, the couple has adopted Sussex as their family name, similar to Prince William and Kate Middleton, who use Wales as their family name after being named Prince and Princess of Wales.
For Meghan, whose full birth name is Rachel Meghan Markle, having the same last name as her children has become something very meaningful. She admitted that she didn't fully realize its significance until she became a mother.
"When you have kids, you think, 'No, I want to share the same last name with my children,'" she explained.
"I didn't realize how much that would mean to me until it just happened. This is our little family's name."
Meghan further shared that adopting the name Sussex represents more than just a formal identity. It symbolizes a precious part of her love story with Prince Harry.
"This name means so much to me," she added.
The decision reflects Meghan's commitment to her family, marking a significant step in embracing her life as both a mother and a member of the royal family.
